Book of GENESIS
The original Hebrew title is “ Bereshith “ means “ In the beginning, and Genesis in Greek means, origin, source, generation or beginning.
From the very first line, “ In the beginning God ….” Tells us many things , that He is the creator, God, that God is a trinity, the original Hebrew text uses 2 letters, Aleph and Tav that is first and last, the name is ELOHIM, ELOH is one singular god, “im “ is a compound unity = plural, John 1:1 , says In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God . He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him, nothing was made that was made. “ The pre-existence of Jesus and in Gen 3 : 15 God gives an indication that Jesus will endure suffering and victory when He curses the serpent for deceiving Eve “ I will put enmity between the and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel . “
The book of Genesis is structured around 11 different sections of genealogy ;
1, the genealogy of Creation 1: 1 – 2: 3. 2, Heaven and Earth 2: 4 – 4: 26. 3, Adam 5: 1 – 6: 8. 4, Noah 6: 9 – 9: 29. 5, Sons of Noah 10: 1 – 11: 9. 6, Shem 11: 10 – 11: 26. 7 , Terah 11: 27 – 25: 11. 8 , Ishmael 25: 12 – 25: 18. 9 , Isaac 25: 19 – 35: 29. 10 , Esau 36: 1 – 37: 1. 11 , Jacob 37: 2 – 50: 26.
God created all things by His Word , “ God said ,”.. “ Let there be light “ ; and there was light .. and it was so , and from the dust of the ground and His breath , God made man, note the scripture says “ Let US make man in OUR image, according to OUR likeness “, and He gave man dominion over all the earth . in 2: 18, God saw that it was not good for man to be alone and in verse 22 creates a woman, Eve .
The serpent, Satan, tempts Eve in Chapter 3, however, Satan did not just appear, it is written in Isaiah 14: 12 – 17 & Ezekiel 28: 13 – 19, how Satan fell to the Earth.
Sin enters the world from the paradise of the garden of Eden and throws humans into a moral freefall as Cain, the firstborn child of the world, kills his brother Abel.
In 6: 5,” God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. “ But a man named Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord, and God instructs Noah to build an ark of immense structure and size, which he does whilst everyone else continues their evil ways. So, Noah and the ark where Gods plan to get rid of sin in the world, He would flood the earth, saving only the righteous Noah and his family, and 2 of all the animals to repopulate once the flood is over. Gen 7 , 8 & 9.
But the sons of Noah split up and did not pass on the story of Gods handiwork to their sons as some went their own way. Gen 10 & 11 and they built a tower of Babel for themselves to be able to reach to the heavens to make a name for themselves. The Lord came down and scattered
them all over the earth and confused their language so they could no longer understand one another. ( Where to babble = confused speech comes from ).
Now Terahs genealogy included Abram, and God chose Abram as patriarch of a specially blessed people, later called “ Israel “ after an alternative name of Abrams grandson Jacob. God makes 3 covenants with Abram in 12, 15, & 17. In 12, Gods covenant with Abram who lived in Ur of the Chaldees is an enormous one that will last forever and has tremendous impact on the world as we know it today, to leave his own land to a place where God will show him , there He will make a great nation and his name will be made great the world over “ And in him all the families of the earth shall be blessed . “
His family moved to Haran; then at Gods command, he led a nomadic life until, by agreement the Jordan itself, in the city of Sodom. When fire fell on Sodom and Gomorrah as a punishment for their wickedness, Gods intervention ensured that Lot was saved.
God made a covenant with Abram, now an old man at 99 years old, promising him a son, descendants as many as the stars in the sky. He renamed Abram, Abraham, father of many or multitude, and he and all the males of the family were circumcised.
In their old age, and by special providence from God, Abraham and his wife bore a son, Isaac, and whilst he was young, God put Abrahams faith and obedience to a test take his son and sacrifice him on mount Moriah. Abraham, with Isaac bound and blade aloft, heard God from heaven and told him to substitute the lad for a ram. Abraham did just that, and the called the place “ The Lord shall provide “ Jehovah Jireh.
Abraham sent one of his servants back to Haran to find a wife for Isaac. At a wellside the servant met Rebecca, he was struck by her beauty and grace and asked if she may be given to Isaac in marriage. She and her male relations consented and travelled south, and she was married to Isaac. Rebecca was childless at first but after Abrahams death, she bore twins, Esau first and then Jacob.
When Jacob was at the point of death he asked Esau to go hunting for him, so that he could enjoy a meat meal before he blessing him as his elder son. Rebecca however disguised Jacob as Esau and tricked her husband into blessing him instead. Once given, the blessing could not be withdrawn, and Esau was furious with his brother for denying him his birthright. So, on his parents advice, Jacob fled to Haran. On the way there he had a dream in which he saw a ladder reaching up from earth to heaven, with angels ascending and descending upon it. God revealed himself to him and renewed the promises he had given to Abraham.
In Haran, Jacob met and fell in love with Rachel, daughter of Laban, his uncle. Jacob worked for Laban for 7 years on the basis of a promise that he could marry Rachel afterwards, but by trickery, Laban contrived that he first marry Rachels elder sister, Leah. Jacob had to work for another 7 years before he could marry Rachel. Then he, in turn, tricked Laban out of many of his animals and left, a wealthy man to return to his own country. On his arrival, he lavished gifts on his brother Esau, and the 2 brothers were reconciled.
One day God appeared to Jacob and gave him the new name of Israel. He told him he would be father to a nation which would inhabit the lands promised to Abraham and Isaac. Israel had 12 sons by his wives and concubines, they were the ancestors of the 12 tribes of his people.
Their names were; Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun. Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Joseph and Benjamin.
Israels favourites were Joseph and Benjamin, the sons of Rachel. Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin the youngest of the brothers.
Israels favouritism towards Joseph angered his older brothers, who contrived that he should be sold into slavery in Egypt and that his father should think that he was dead. Joseph had a chequered career in Egypt until God enabled him to interpret Pharoahs dreams, which secured him royal favour. He became second only to Pharoah in the land and successfully steered Egypt through a prolonged period of famine which afflicted the whole region. During this famine, his brothers came to Egypt to buy food. Joseph played various tricks on them before revealing who he was. Then he obtained permission for the whole family to move to Egypt, where they prospered and multiplied.
Throughout Genesis, from Adam and Eve, from the start of creation, we are met by people doing things their own way, disregarding God and His direction, which always leads to sin and despair. God has to intervene with a plan.
God is indeed answering his problem of what to do when us humans rebel and go our own way. The solution is Jesus Christ through who the world came to be, for whom it was made, and by whom we discover the answer to all our questions.
